Yoga therapy

New research by Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis has found that practicing yoga after a stroke may help rebuild balance and prevent potentially disabling falls among the elderly. The new study shows stroke survivors who participated in a specialised post-stroke yoga class improved their balance by up to 34%. Researchers say the participants also experienced a big boost in their own self-confidence after their yoga practice and became more physically active in their communities.

Although the trial was run with a very modified and specifically-designed class tailored to the participants’ needs and taught by a yoga therapist, it does reveal how yoga may be able to help with even severe medical conditions.

On another yoga blog there’s a post about yoga helping with sufferers of Parkinson’s disease. I come across quite a few examples of yoga helping with various conditions, ailments or diseases. Were these conditions around when yoga was ‘created’, and if not, how does it all work? It’s clever stuff this yoga!
